How Do Eagles Hunt in Water?
Eagles are effective hunters in water due to their exceptional eyesight, impressive flight speed, and specialized hunting techniques. Eagles have some of the best vision in the animal kingdom. Their eyes have adapted over centuries to spot and detect prey from great distances. Eagles can spot fish that are close to the surface from several hundred feet away under ideal conditions, thanks to their exceptional eyesight. Eagles are believed to have vision that is four to eight times better than that of humans. This remarkable eyesight enables them to detect even the smallest details in the water, such as subtle ripples or the glint of fish scales near the surface.
Eagles’ flight speed and technique are another reason why they are such good hunters. Eagles fly several hundred feet above water, cruising at around 20 to 40 miles per hour. When prey is spotted and an eagle wants to attack, it can dive at speeds of up to about 75 miles per hour, almost double its cruising speed! As the eagle gets close to the water, it spreads its talons forward before dipping slightly below the water’s surface. While the video shows an eagle hunting fish, eagles use the same technique to hunt smaller mammals, birds, and reptiles as well. With these abilities, eagles are easily some of the best hunters in the world, on land and in the water.
